Kofta ( Meat Balls )

Kofta that is known as meatballs internationally. Kofta is round shaped meat minced. It has desi Pakistani spices crushed in it. It can be shallow fried or also can be added in a curry specially made for Kofta. It is prepared in Eid ul Adha as side dish (shallow fried) or main course as curry. In Karachi, potatoes are also added in the curry. Punjabi Kofta curry includes boiled eggs besides potatoes. It is served with hot chapatis.

Recipe

Ingredients

For the kofta:

  • 1 lb ground beef or lamb
  • 1/2 cup onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tbsp ginger-garlic paste
  • 1/4 cup chopped cilantro
  • 1 tsp cumin powder
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • 1/2 tsp red chili powder
  • Salt, to taste
  • Oil, for frying

For the gravy:

  • 2 tbsp ghee or oil
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tbsp ginger-garlic paste
  • 2 cups tomato puree
  • 1 tsp cumin powder
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tsp red chili powder
  • Salt, to taste
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • Chopped cilantro, for garnish

Directions

  1. In a large bowl, mix together the ground meat, onion, ginger-garlic paste, cilantro, cumin powder, coriander powder, red chili powder, and salt until well combined.
  2. Take a small portion of the mixture in your hand and shape it into a small ball or patty. Repeat with the remaining mixture.
  3. Heat oil in a large frying pan and fry the kofta until golden brown on all sides. Drain and set aside.
  4. In another pan, heat ghee or oil and add the chopped onion. Saute until the onion turns translucent.
  5. Add the ginger-garlic paste and saute for a few more minutes.
  6. Add the tomato puree, cumin powder, coriander powder, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt. Mix well and cook for 10-15 minutes until the gravy thickens.
  7. Add the heavy cream and mix well. Bring the mixture to a boil and then reduce the heat to low.
  8. Add the fried kofta to the gravy and simmer for 10-15 minutes until the kofta are cooked through and the gravy thickens.
  9. Garnish with chopped cilantro and serve hot with rice or naan. Enjoy your delicious kofta!
