Phitti ( GB )

It is a round thick bread and if you want to experience how to make it then Hunza welcomes you all to see the this Hunzai bread traditionally made in a cast iron skillet buried under hot coals and ashes in a hearth. The most preferred combination is eating phitti with tea seasoned with SALT (not sugar) and some butter. It is a famous  breakfast in Gilgit and northern areas of Pakistan as well.

  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the whole wheat flour, salt, and baking powder.
  2. Slowly add water to the mixture, and knead the dough until it becomes smooth and pliable.
  3. Divide the dough into small, golf-ball sized balls.
  4. Flatten the balls into thin disks using a rolling pin.
  5. Heat a non-stick pan or griddle over medium heat.
  6. Place the flattened disks of dough onto the pan, and cook for about 2-3 minutes on each side, until they are lightly browned.
  7. Once the bread is cooked, remove it from the pan and set it aside.
  8. Repeat the process with the remaining dough balls until all of the Phitti is cooked.
  9. Serve the Phitti hot with a side of lentils or any other curry of your choice.

Enjoy your Phitti bread!
