Phitti ( GB )
It is a round thick bread and if you want to experience how to make it then Hunza welcomes you all to see the this Hunzai bread traditionally made in a cast iron skillet buried under hot coals and ashes in a hearth. The most preferred combination is eating phitti with tea seasoned with SALT (not sugar) and some butter. It is a famous breakfast in Gilgit and northern areas of Pakistan as well.
Recipe
Ingredients
- 2 cups whole wheat flour
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/4 cup vegetable oil
Directions
- In a mixing bowl, combine the whole wheat flour, salt, and baking powder.
- Slowly add water to the mixture, and knead the dough until it becomes smooth and pliable.
- Divide the dough into small, golf-ball sized balls.
- Flatten the balls into thin disks using a rolling pin.
- Heat a non-stick pan or griddle over medium heat.
- Place the flattened disks of dough onto the pan, and cook for about 2-3 minutes on each side, until they are lightly browned.
- Once the bread is cooked, remove it from the pan and set it aside.
- Repeat the process with the remaining dough balls until all of the Phitti is cooked.
- Serve the Phitti hot with a side of lentils or any other curry of your choice.
