Besan ki Roti

Home/Food/Punjabi/Besan ki Roti

Besan wali roti is a favourite roti of Punjabis. It is prepared in winters and eaten with raita and achaar. It is made by kneading  gram flour and whole wheat flour. Onions, green chillies, coriander leaves are added with some hints of spices. This mixture is now rolled into a circular shape and cooked or greased with oil. It is a healthy roti for diet conscious people.

  • 1 cup besan (gram flour)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon ajwain seeds (carom seeds)
  • 1/4 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • 1/2 cup water (or as needed)

  1. In a mixing bowl, add the besan, salt, red chili powder, coriander powder, turmeric powder, ajwain seeds, and cumin seeds. Mix well.
  2. Add oil to the flour mixture and mix well with your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Gradually add water to the mixture and knead into a soft and smooth dough. Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rest for 10-15 minutes.
  4. After the dough has rested, divide it into equal-sized balls. Dust each ball with flour and roll out into a thin circle.
  5. Heat a griddle or a non-stick pan over medium heat. Once hot, place the rolled-out dough circle onto the griddle and cook for 30 seconds.
  6. Flip the roti and cook for another 30 seconds. Then, drizzle a few drops of oil on the top of the roti and spread it around with a spatula.
  7. Flip the roti again and cook for 15-20 seconds. Then, drizzle a few more drops of oil on the top of the roti and spread it around with a spatula.
  8. Flip the roti again and cook for another 15-20 seconds, until both sides are golden brown and crispy.
  9. Remove the roti from the griddle and place it onto a plate. Repeat with the remaining dough balls.
  10. Serve the besan ki roti hot with your favorite curry or chutney. Enjoy!
