Barfi

Barfi is another milk based sweet of Pakistan. It is a soft dessert that is popular among every age. Plain barfis are made from condensed milk and sugar. The mixture is cooked until it solidifies. Barfi has different flavours like besan kaju barfi, badam barfi, pista barfi etc. Barfi are moulded into different shapes like square, diamond, sphere etc. It is served in gatherings and occasions of happiness. The most famous barfis are native to Chakwal.

Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk
  • 2 cups powdered milk
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/4 teaspoon cardamom powder
  • A few strands of saffron
  • Chopped nuts for garnish

Directions

  1. In a heavy-bottomed pan, melt the butter on medium heat.
  2. Add the sweetened condensed milk and powdered milk to the pan, and mix well to combine.
  3. Cook the mixture on medium heat, stirring continuously, until it thickens and starts to come together in a mass. This will take about 10-15 minutes.
  4. Add the cardamom powder and saffron strands to the pan and mix well.
  5. Turn off the heat and let the mixture cool down to room temperature.
  6. Once the mixture is cool enough to handle, grease a square or rectangular pan with butter or oil. Transfer the mixture to the pan and spread it evenly.
  7. Sprinkle chopped nuts over the top of the mixture and press them down gently.
  8. Let the barfi set in the refrigerator for about 1-2 hours, or until it becomes firm.
  9. Once the barfi is set, remove it from the refrigerator and cut it into desired shapes, such as squares or diamonds.
  10. Serve the barfi as a dessert or as a sweet snack. Enjoy your homemade barfi!
