Shakar paray is a famous tea time snack that is liked by elders and children. Shakar paray is a sweet version of Namak paray. It is very crispy and crunchy snack. Sugar is sprinkled over it to give it a good sweet taste. It is made from all purpose flour. Shakar paray is mostly square or diamond in shape. It is available in Pakistani bakeries and samosa shops.

Recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup semolina
  • 1/4 cup ghee or butter
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp cardamom powder
  • Oil for frying
  • Water, as required

Directions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine all-purpose flour, semolina, sugar, salt, and cardamom powder.
  2. Add ghee or butter and mix well until the mixture is crumbly.
  3. Gradually add water, 1-2 tbsp at a time, and knead the dough until it becomes smooth and pliable. The dough should not be too stiff or too sticky.
  4. Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rest for 10-15 minutes.
  5. Divide the dough into small equal-sized balls, approximately the size of a cherry.
  6. Dust a rolling surface with some flour and roll out each ball of dough into a thin circle, approximately 2-3 inches in diameter.
  7. Use a knife or a cookie cutter to cut the rolled-out dough into small diamond-shaped pieces.
  8. Heat oil in a deep-frying pan over medium heat.
  9. Carefully add the diamond-shaped pieces of dough to the hot oil and fry until they turn golden brown and crispy, stirring occasionally.
  10. Remove the fried Shakar Pare from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain the excess oil.
  11. Let the Shakar Pare cool down and then store them in an airtight container.
  12. Serve these sweet and crispy Shakar Pare as a snack with a cup of tea or coffee. Enjoy your delicious and easy-to-make Shakar Pare!
