Halwa Puri

Home/Food/Punjabi/Halwa Puri

Halwa Puri is a famous and most recommended breakfast all over Pakistan especially Karachi and Lahore. Halwa Puri can be known as the king of nashta in Pakistan. A crispy and deep fried flatbread is served in contrast with suji (semolina) ka halwa and chickpeas. Mixed pickle complements Halwa Puri a lot. Lahoris love to have Lassi in combination with it. Halwa Puri is similar to India’s cholay bhatureay but cholay bhaturay does not include halwa in it. It is easily available internationally in Pakistani restaurants  like Dubai, UK, USA, Canada etc.

Recipe

Ingredients

Ingredients for Suji Ka Halwa:

  • 1 cup semolina (suji)
  • 1/2 cup ghee
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 2 cups water
  • 1/4 teaspoon cardamom powder
  • 2 tablespoons sliced almonds and pistachios

Ingredients for Puri:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons ghee
  • Water as needed
  • Oil for deep frying

Directions

Instructions for Suji Ka Halwa:

  1. Heat ghee in a heavy-bottomed pan over medium heat.
  2. Add semolina and stir constantly for about 8-10 minutes, or until it turns light brown and fragrant.
  3. Add water and sugar to the pan, and stir well to combine.
  4. Turn the heat to low and let the halwa cook for about 5-6 minutes, or until it thickens and starts to pull away from the sides of the pan.
  5. Add cardamom powder and sliced almonds and pistachios, and mix well.
  6. Serve hot with puri.

Instructions for Puri:

  1. In a large bowl, mix together flour, salt, and ghee.
  2. Add water little by little and knead until you get a soft and smooth dough. Cover and let it rest for 30 minutes.
  3. Divide the dough into small equal-sized balls.
  4. Roll each ball into a thin circle, about 3-4 inches in diameter.
  5. Heat oil in a deep frying pan over medium heat.
  6. Once the oil is hot, gently slide the puri into the oil and press it down with a slotted spoon. This will help it puff up.
  7. Flip the puri and cook until it is golden brown on both sides.
  8. Use a slotted spoon to remove the puri from the oil and place it on a paper towel to remove any excess oil.
  9. Repeat with the remaining dough balls.
  10. Serve hot with suji ka halwa. Enjoy!
